The Books and Mottos of King Henri III

The King was a devout Catholic and liked some of the more ghoulish trappings of his religion.  His motto was Spes Mea Deus, Hope is My God, ornamented with death heads. Remember that the 16th century was a time of great superstition: there were environmental calamities (floods and an actual mini Ice Age) and plagues that man could not understand or do anything about.

  • Comment on the ornamentation around the clock:

  • Eliane Viennot's book on the correspondance of Marguerite (his sister, the infamous Queen Margot) dsicusses the use of cipher-like devises in this period,  e.g. the X-shaped motifs in the garland on the clock.

  • This garland is also used on the collar for the order of the Saint-Esprit, founded by King Henri.

  • What looks like a dollar sign is a symbol for firmness.

  • Margot used the XXX motif when she was in good spirits as a closing to her letters.  Also see Charavay, Documents Inedits, V 1, p 187.
