The Books and Mottos of King Henri III
The King was a devout Catholic and liked some of the more
ghoulish trappings of his religion. His motto was Spes Mea Deus, Hope is
My God, ornamented with death heads. Remember that the 16th century was a time
of great superstition: there were environmental calamities (floods and an actual mini Ice Age) and plagues that man could not understand or do anything
about. Manuel du Tres Chretien Roi Henri III
