King Henri III

King Henri III of France in Classic Black Dress

These portraits share two things: somber dress and the blue cordon of the Order of the Saint-Esprit, founded by the king.

So, all portraits should date after the 1578 foundation of the order.  Many curiously resemble the chalk drawings often attributed to the period 1582-5.  Finally, some are attributed to as early 1574.

The portraits in the enormous series of oil paintings at the chateau de Beauregard are notoriously poor: the subjects all look sneaky and slant-eyed.

The image from Solnon's book appears to be a copy of the Louvre portrait, but flipped either in the original (via camera oscura) or by the publisher.
