Early Images of King Henri III of France

He was christened Edouard-Alexandre his godfather King Edward VII of England, the son of King Henry VIII. Interesting choices: France would remain at odds with England for years. At his confirmation, he took the name of his father, Henri, but his name was spelled Henry in the 16th century

These pencil drawings were favored by his mother, Catherine de Medici, because they took so much less time to execute than oil portraits.  Obviously, she was a loving mother interested in her numerous children who were often separated from her: there was not any room for them at court, so, they lived in the Loire Valley, not with the King and Queen.

As a baby: an unidentified child of Henri II and Catherine de Médici, probably Alexandre-Edouard, the future Henri III François Clouet?
