King Henri III |
King Francois IIEldest brother of King Henri III, and husband of Mary, Queen of Scots
His reign was mostly known for a continuation of the policy of his father Henri II who had tried to establish a Franco-Scottish empire. Technically, there was no regent during his reign, but his uncles, Charles Cardinal de Lorraine and Francois de Guise dominated the royal council. Their bad influence has been much over emphasized since historians initially relied on diplomatic reports of the English who were inveterate Guise-haters due to the Anglo-Scottish rivalry. Scotland was ruled by Marie de Guise, their sister and Francois II's mother-in-law, as regent for Mary Queen of Scots. Francois' mother Catherine de Medici was not without influence during this time, but, she was just starting to develop a sphere of influence after the death of her husband , who had marginalized her in favor of the political influence of his mistress, Diane de Poitiers.
