The House of Guise

One of the three great noble houses in France

The House of Guise was a cadet branch (younger sons) of the House of Lorraine.  It rose to power ca 1558 when Marie de Guise's daughter, Mary Queen of Scots, married the Dauphin Francois, son of Henri II. Their influence evaporated a few years later when Francois died and Mary returned to Scotland.

Mary's first cousins, Henri, Duc de Guise and his brother Louis, Cardinal de Guise would die killed by the guards of King Henri III in 1588, for fomenting a rebellion of the ultramontanist Catholics against the crown
